Leaving a gift in your will
How to remember the team in your will, with suggested wording and our charity number.
If you are in a position to remember a charity in your will, please consider The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team. Our charity number is 1173246.
There are four ways to leave a gift.
- A residue gift: a percentage share of your estate. Suggested wording: “I give all (or a ……% share) of the residue of my estate to The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team - Charity Number 1173246, to the Treasurer – to be used for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other proper officer, shall be a full and sufficient discharge.”
- A cash gift. Suggested wording: “I give free of tax to The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team - Charity Number 1173246, to the Treasurer – the sum of £……… (words and figures) to be used for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other proper officer, shall be a full and sufficient discharge.”
- A reversionary legacy, which provides for someone else during their lifetime and only takes effect after they have died. A professional adviser who understands your personal circumstances should draft this.
- Changing an existing will by codicil. Suggested codicil wording is on dfmrt.org.uk. Two witnesses are required in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and one in Scotland, and the completed codicil should be sent to the solicitor holding your will.
All gifts to charities are wholly exempt from inheritance tax. A donation made during your lifetime can attract Gift Aid of 25% for the charity if you pay income or capital gains tax, with an additional return for higher and additional rate taxpayers, but neither applies to a legacy.
