Leaving a gift in your will

DFMRT’s published guidance on remembering the team in a will, including its suggested wording and charity number.

DFMRT asks anyone in a position to remember a charity in their will to consider The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team. Its charity number is 1173246.

The official page describes four options.

A residue gift: a percentage share of your estate. DFMRT’s suggested wording is: “I give all (or a ……% share) of the residue of my estate to The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team - Charity Number 1173246, to the Treasurer – to be used for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other proper officer, shall be a full and sufficient discharge.”
A cash gift. DFMRT’s suggested wording is: “I give free of tax to The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team - Charity Number 1173246, to the Treasurer – the sum of £……… (words and figures) to be used for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other proper officer, shall be a full and sufficient discharge.”
A reversionary legacy, which provides for someone else during their lifetime and only takes effect after they have died. DFMRT says a professional adviser who understands your personal circumstances should draft this.
Changing an existing will by codicil. DFMRT provides suggested codicil wording on its official page. It notes that two witnesses are required in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and one in Scotland, and that the completed codicil should be sent to the solicitor holding your will.

DFMRT states that all gifts to charities are wholly exempt from inheritance tax. It also notes that a donation made during your lifetime can attract Gift Aid of 25% for the charity if you pay income or capital gains tax, with an additional return for higher and additional rate taxpayers, but that neither applies to a legacy.
