Team history

How the Furness and Millom teams developed and came together as DFMRT.

The current Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 2003 from the amalgamation of the Furness and Millom teams. The two teams had begun joint training and joint attendance at call-outs through an operational merger in 2000.

Millom Fell Rescue Team was formed in 1967 after a light aircraft, reported overdue, was found near the summit of Black Combe. A local farmer, Jack Morris-Eyton, proposed forming a rescue team for the Millom area, and local climbers and walkers were recruited. The Millom base was later relocated to Foxfield as part of the merger process.

Furness Mountain Rescue Team was founded in 1962 as the Furness Mountain Search Team. The team’s history says John Wyatt MBE was instrumental in establishing it after a 1961 missing-person search highlighted the need for trained searchers. It adopted the Furness Mountain Rescue Team name in 1982.
